Sustainability in the Repair Industry – A Step in the Right Direction!

Sustainability is particularly close to my heart – and I am happy that more and more companies are joining this path! Recently, we had the opportunity to repair several Mitsubishi Drives for a well-known company. Until then, defective devices were simply replaced with new ones, and the old ones were disposed of in an environmentally responsible way. But what does "environmentally responsible" actually mean?

The Truth About "Environmentally Responsible" Disposal

Many companies dispose of defective electronics responsibly, but is this truly sustainable?

  • Are plastic parts and heat sinks actually recycled? In some cases yes, but often only partially.
  • What happens to the electronic components? Are they reused or do they end up in the scrap heap?
  • And what about the capacitors, which are full of chemicals?

These are questions I keep asking myself when it comes to the environmental impact of electronic waste. "Environmentally responsible disposal" sounds good, but in many cases, valuable resources are lost.

Why I Choose Repair...

(Blog post by: Viktor Siebert, CEO of industrypart GmbH)

Caution is advised when purchasing used machine components – a recent case from our workshop illustrates this impressively. About three weeks ago, a customer sent us a Yaskawa SGMSH-15ACA6C servo motor that he had purchased on eBay. The seller promised a refurbished product at an attractive price with fast delivery and a warranty – perfect for having a spare in stock.

The Unpleasant Surprise

The motor remained untouched in storage for two months until it was urgently needed after a machine crash. The customer unpacked it without hesitation, as the eBay pictures looked promising. But reality was different: The motor was heavily soiled, rusty, and far from what he had expected. Nevertheless, he had no choice – the machine had to run.

The Fatal Consequences

After installation, the motor ran, but accompanying grinding noises did not bode well. It remained in operation for two days, with the machine reporting errors every two hours. Eventually, the customer noticed a burnt smell – a Yaskawa SGDH-15AE servo drive started smoking in the control cabinet. The situation was critical.

Today, we would like to share a success story from our company that highlights how innovative solutions and customized repairs can help our customers.

Assessment

A customer approached us with a defective spindle motor, model Yaskawa USAIKM-50-BK43-D. This motor is considered difficult to repair since no replacement parts are available on the market—especially the encoder, which is often a weak point.

The motor was completely seized: damaged ball bearings had destroyed the shaft, and the encoder had been rendered inoperative due to coolant ingress.
