We are currently experiencing sustained sub-zero temperatures in Germany and large parts of Europe. For many companies, this means that after extended downtime over Christmas and New Year, machines are being put back into operation. Unfortunately, reality often paints a different picture, as it is precisely during these phases that error messages suddenly appear, axes become unstable or drive systems refuse to work.

Why does this happen in cold weather of all times?

Electronic assemblies, especially in drive and power electronics, are sensitive to low temperatures. When starting up after a long break, the components must first stabilise thermally. However, if the electronics are already getting on in years, certain components can cause problems when cold. Electrolytic capacitors are particularly affected here, as their properties change significantly with age and temperature.

In some cases, brief heating is sufficient and the system then continues to run without any apparent problems. In other cases, however, permanent damage to the electronics occurs, often without warning. This results in unplanned downtime, lost time and significantly higher costs.
