Device Arrival – Error F-E04 Yaskawa Varispeed 626VM3 CIMR-VMW2022 Spec: 20222
A customer sent us a Yaskawa Varispeed 626VM3 inverter unit for repair. The device was occasionally displaying error F-E04 (Motor Code Selection Error). The customer had already replaced the cooling fans, but the error still occurred sporadically — sometimes the unit ran flawlessly, other times it would trigger the fault without clear pattern.
As we have been working with this series for a long time, we were already familiar with the issue. The root cause typically lies in aging critical components, which degrade over time. If left unaddressed, the problem gradually worsens and can eventually lead to a catastrophic failure of the power stage. In such cases, repairs become far more complex and costly.
Fault Diagnosis & Testing on Our Bench
Fortunately, the customer contacted us in time — before any major damage had occurred. We subjected the device to a comprehensive analysis. At our in-house test station, we ran the unit with an original Yaskawa motor and were able to reproduce the fault.
We offered the customer a complete overhaul, which he accepted without hesitation.
Complete Overhaul & Replacement of Critical Components
The unit was fully disassembled. All circuit boards and housing parts were carefully cleaned, washed, and dried. We then replaced all worn and safety-critical components, including:
- Electrolytic and buffer capacitors
- Relays
- Transistor modules
- Current measurement modules
After reassembly, the device underwent extensive testing. The original error no longer appeared, and the inverter was successfully shipped back to the customer.
Customer Feedback – New Error F-100
Shortly after commissioning, the customer contacted us again — somewhat confused. The inverter operated properly in manual mode, and the tool engagement worked as expected. However, when running the automated machining program, error F-100 (Inverter Output Overcurrent) was triggered at specific points.
We immediately recognized the pattern, as this issue is also familiar to us and often relates to a worn Winding Selection Contactor.
Root Cause: Winding Selection Contactor
This component sits between the inverter and the motor and is responsible for switching between different motor windings depending on operation — much like shifting gears in a car. The switching is done mechanically via a contactor, which has a finite lifespan. After a certain number of operations, its reliability declines, leading to faults like F100.
Since we had the correct contactor in stock, the customer was able to replace it quickly. After the replacement, the machine ran without any issues.
Conclusion & Recommendation
This experience reinforces a key lesson: even if errors like F-100 do not occur constantly, the preventive replacement of the Winding Selection Contactor is highly recommended — even if the component has not yet shown clear signs of failure. Maintenance is not only about fixing existing problems, but also about proactively replacing critical parts before they become a liability.
