Successful Repair of a Haas 40HP Vector Drive – 29-10081 Rev B
The Case
A customer contacted us with a defective 40HP Vector Drive (Part No. 29-10081 Rev B, built ca. 2008). The CNC machine shut down unexpectedly under load with “Alarm 123 – Spindle Drive Fault.” The customer suspected a spindle motor problem, but based on our experience, the issue was within the vector drive itself.
Diagnosis
Upon inspection, we found signs of severe overheating on the power stage. The cooling fan had failed, and the heat sink was clogged — leading to “Alarm 200 – High Voltage Power Supply Over-Temperature”
Measured issues included:
- DC bus voltage exceeded 360VDC under no load
- Output resistance values were out of spec
- REGEN resistor was functional, but the internal logic switched it too late
Repair Measures
- Replaced defective fan
- Cleaned entire cooling channel
- change all capaciters
- Replaced damaged IGBT modules and overhauling of the REGEN circuit
- Final test on load-simulation bench
The unit was successfully repaired, tested, and returned to the customer.
