Heat Damage due to Fan Failure in Yaskawa SGDM-30DN AC Servopack
In the peak summer of 2025, a long-standing customer contacted us about an urgent breakdown. The Yaskawa SGDM-30DN in one of their CNC machines had suddenly stopped working mid-operation. The X-axis crashed as a result, causing significant mechanical damage—costing the customer several thousand euros in repairs.
Our analysis quickly revealed the underlying issue:
In an effort to combat the high summer temperatures, the customer had left machine doors open and set up external fans. However, multiple overheating warnings had been ignored due to workload pressure and lack of time.
When we opened the unit, the extent of the damage was obvious:
The internal fan was completely seized. Dust and heat had taken their toll on the cooling system. The power module was severely overheated, with visible burn marks. Several power transistors had failed, and the control section showed signs of thermal stress, especially around the gate driver circuitry.
Repair Process in Detail
- Disassembly & Initial Inspection
- Opened the housing and performed a full visual assessment
- Removed visible soot and residue from the burned components
- Cleaning & Diagnosis
- Carried out full cleaning with industrial-grade solvents
- Inspected the PCBs under a microscope for micro-cracks and carbonization
- Preventive Replacement
- All output stage transistors were replaced
- Control board inspected; damaged capacitors and resistors replaced
- Fan, thermal switches, and insulation parts were renewed
- Testing & Thermal Endurance
- Mounted the unit on our in-house test bench
- Simulated full-load operation in a 40 °C heated chamber
- Conducted runtime tests with variable speed and load cycles
- Documentation & Protocol
- Filled out repair checklists and final test protocols
- Provided the customer with a detailed report and photo documentation
Outcome
The unit was successfully restored to full functionality.
Since then, the customer has decided to send in additional drives for preventive overhaul a wise and cost-effective decision after learning from this expensive incident.
