The SGDM-50ADAY457 Case – How We Saved a Customer from a Costly Mistake
A few weeks ago, a concerned customer contacted us. His Yaskawa Servopack SGDM-50ADAY457 had failed, and despite several repair attempts at another workshop, the device simply would not function. The service provider eventually resorted to what they called a solution: they supplied a replacement device – supposedly new, and sourced directly from China.
A Supposedly New Device – But a Total Letdown
Once the “new” device was installed, massive issues surfaced. It couldn’t be parameterized, threw out cryptic error codes, and refused to integrate properly with the machine’s control system. Production remained at a standstill.
In his frustration, the customer brought us both devices – the original Servopack and the so-called replacement. Within minutes, our head technician made a sobering discovery.
A Label Fraud from the Far East
We found that the replacement device, while visually identical from the outside, was an entirely different model on the inside. The type label had been altered, and the internal components didn’t match the original. Sadly, this is not uncommon: refurbished and relabeled devices from China are often sold as “new” – even by repair providers who can’t tell the difference.
Why This Device Could Never Work
Thanks to our extensive internal database – built from thousands of photos, videos, and circuit diagrams – we were able to accurately identify the original unit and compare it with the fake. The differences were dramatic: incorrect PCBs, incompatible firmware versions, and completely different electrical characteristics. No wonder the machine couldn’t be configured or operated properly.
The Real Damage: Over-Repaired Instead of Properly Repaired
What made the situation worse: the original device could have been repaired with targeted measures. But in the previous workshop, it was essentially “over-repaired” to death – incorrect components soldered in, PCB traces damaged, ICs desoldered and never replaced. The assumption seemed to be that the replacement would work anyway – which it clearly didn’t. In the end, we had to replace the entire power board, which was beyond repair.
A Proper Diagnosis Saves the Day
We completed the full repair in less than a week. The customer was relieved – not only because of the quick turnaround but because of the clear explanation and our technical transparency. The damage was minimized. He was even able to return the faulty replacement device and recover the €3,000 he had spent on it.
Conclusion: Quality, Experience, and Honesty Make the Difference
In today’s market, more and more so-called “experts” are tinkering with highly complex drive electronics without proper knowledge. This is especially dangerous with brands like Yaskawa, whose sophisticated control and power electronics require expertise.
At Industrypart GmbH, we rely on transparent diagnostics, verifiable repair histories, and genuine technical know-how – backed by our proprietary databases and decades of experience. This case once again proves: choosing the wrong provider or chasing a cheap deal can cost far more in the end – in money, time, and lost production.
