SJ-VL5.5-10ZM Mitsubishi AC Spindle Motor: Repair, Specifications, and Solutions
Repair Story: Focus on Precision and Innovation
In recent years, we have successfully repaired numerous Mitsubishi SJ-VL5.5-10ZM AC spindle motors. Initially, we faced challenges in sourcing high-quality bearings, as the original manufacturers no longer supplied these specialized components. To ensure the required precision at high speeds, we commissioned custom-made bearings.
Another issue was the lack of replacement parts for encoders. We developed solutions by providing replacement encoders and refurbishing defective ones in our workshop. After refurbishment, they function like new.
Our performed tasks include:
- Professional replacement of all bearings
- Thorough cleaning of the motor
- Replacement of the defective encoder sensor
- Overhaul and adjustment of the encoder electronics
- Renewal of all seals and connectors
- Repainting of the motor
- Extended testing of the motor
Some machine manufacturers reported that Mitsubishi no longer supports these motors or offers them at inflated prices. Therefore, they commissioned us to develop repair processes for this motor type. For over three years, we have been successfully repairing these motors, and our customers are satisfied. Even if the encoder needs to be replaced, the repair remains economical compared to purchasing a new motor.
Note: This motor can be equipped with various encoders, gears, and magnetic discs, such as TS1860N1270, BKO-NC6619H11. We test the motor on the Mitsubishi Spindle Drive MDS-B-SP-75 and also perform load tests.

Operating Environment and Compatibility
The SJ-VL5.5-10ZM spindle motor is designed for use in CNC lathes and operates optimally with Mitsubishi spindle drives such as the MDS-B-SP-75. It is commonly used in machine models like , TNC42, TNC65, TNL16, TNC30, TNS26
Functional Description
The Mitsubishi SJ-VL5.5-10ZM is a high-speed AC spindle motor designed for precision applications in machine tools.
It features a smooth cylindrical shaft without keyway, commonly used in applications where power is transmitted via press-fit, clamping hubs, or other friction-lock connections.
Cooling is provided by an axial fan mounted at the rear. The motor is suitable for variable-speed operations and offers both continuous (S1) and short-time (S3) performance modes.
Alarm Messages and Troubleshooting by Spindle Drive
| Alarm Code | Description | Possible Cause | Suggested Solution |
|---|
| A.32 | Overcurrent in power module | Short circuit in motor or drive | Disconnect motor leads (U, V, W) from the drive and check each output phase of the drive for a short circuit to ground. |
| 6F | Spindle encoder error | Faulty encoder or wiring issue | Check the connection between CN4 (CV) and CN4 (SP) and ensure that the SH21 cable is properly connected. |
