The Case: Smoke Development in the Mitsubishi Servodrive
Mitsubishi ServoDrive MDS-C1-V2-0505 with Visible Damage
A customer reported that their servo drive was emitting smoke, particularly during specific machining programs. Otherwise, the machine operated normally without displaying any error messages.
Upon receiving the devices for repair, we noticed visible damage on the Mitsubishi Servo Amplifier MDS-C1-V2-0505: the housing near the power stage was distorted and discolored. During tests with a Mitsubishi controller and load, the drive initially functioned without issues. However, abnormal voltage spikes occurred when connected to the power supply unit MDS-C1-CV-185, especially during braking. The more frequent and intense the braking, the higher the voltage at the DC output became, eventually causing smoke from the drive.
Diagnosis and Repair
Our analysis revealed that the power supply had issues with recuperation, causing the output voltage to rise. However, it was unclear why the servo amplifier failed to detect this condition and did not trigger an alarm. By exchanging boards, we identified a defective circuit board in the servo amplifier, which we successfully repaired by replacing components.
Both units were repaired successfully. The customer was relieved, as the machine manufacturer had already discontinued support for this equipment.
Conclusion: Experience and Know-how Pay Off
This case underscores the importance of checking both the power supply and servo amplifier when troubleshooting issues. The combination of technical expertise and practical experience enabled us to identify and rectify the problem’s root cause. This is an invaluable service for customers operating older machines no longer supported by the manufacturer.
