Common Issue & Recommendation for Alarm #123 and #160.

Today, we’d like to inform you about a recurring issue with HAAS Vector Drives – specifically the 20HP model, 29-10082 Rev. B. Many of our customers report similar symptoms and error messages that should not be ignored.

Typical Error Messages

Alarm #123: Spindle Drive Fault
Alarm #160: Undervoltage

These messages indicate a voltage issue within the device – a phenomenon we frequently encounter in our workshop.

What’s behind it?

The undervoltage error suggests that the internal DC voltage of approximately 320V is not being reached. This can have various causes – often, it’s due to a gradual fault within the Vector Drive itself.

How the error manifests

Initially, the issue occurs sporadically.
Often, the device starts working again after several power cycles – or once it has “warmed up.”
Over time, the condition deteriorates: the unit requires more attempts to start and becomes increasingly unreliable.

The danger: Capacitor damage from repeated power cycling

Anyone who keeps trying to force the device into operation risks causing serious secondary damage. Especially critical: the buffer electrolytic capacitors may explode under stress. In such cases, the device is often beyond repair, leading to costly downtime and replacement expenses.

Our recommendation:

As soon as the first signs appear, the unit should be sent in for repair without delay. This helps prevent major damage – and in many cases, we can restore the drive quickly and cost-effectively.
